Channeling Roger

September 24, 2026 • Zehen

I feel most productive on the days I run or play tennis.

The difference is stark. On days I move, my energy is higher, my mind is clearer, and work feels easier. On days I skip it, everything feels heavier.

The strange part is that I do not need much to begin. If I can just start the warm up, I am usually good to go. Even three push ups can trigger the chain reaction. A tiny warm up becomes stretching. Stretching becomes movement. Movement becomes an energizing workout.

So the real problem is not fitness. The real problem is starting the warm up.

That is the critical domino. If I can knock it over, the rest of the day has a much better chance of going well.

The enemy is the mind. It produces excuses with impressive speed. The most convincing excuse is work. There may be something urgent from the night before. Something may have broken while I was asleep. Something may need attention.

And just like that, the warm up is gone.

Roger Federer would not have this problem before practice. Not because he has no worries, but because he has a system around him. Assistants, schedules, routines, and support structures protect his practice time.

That made me ask a useful question.

Can I build a small system that gives me the same protection?

This is how I channel my inner Roger.

I defer the worrying. First, I wear my running or tennis shoes. Then I start stretching. While stretching, I bex to an expression that summarizes what happened at work overnight.

I get just enough context to know whether anything truly needs me. Then I resume stretching.

I play for 45 minutes.

After the first set, I check Telegram to see whether all systems are green. If they are, set two is on.

Looks like set two is on today.

Either way, I return home energized and ready to work. In a small but real way, I have channeled Roger.
